61-year-old Ni Xia Lian won her first match on Saturday against Sibel Altinkaya from Turkey, who is 30 years younger. No female table tennis player has ever been older than the Luxembourger when winning at the Olympics.

This is the sixth Olympic Games for Lian, who was born in Shanghai. The Luxembourger's first appearance was in Sydney 2000. She celebrated her first success at the World Championships in Tokyo in 1983, where she became world champion in the mixed doubles and team competition.

Swimming trunks instead of a doctor's coat

Canadian swimmer Jeremy Bagshaw makes his Olympic Games debut on Tuesday at the age of 32. He will be competing in the 4x200 m crawl relay. The special thing: Bagshaw completed his medical studies in Ireland and works as a doctor. Nevertheless, he has always tried to qualify for the Olympics since Beijing 2008 - without success for a long time. Just two days after the Games, the Canadian has to swap his swimming trunks for a doctor's coat again.

Djokovic as a fan in the audience

Tennis star Novak Djokovic and his family supported the Serbian national volleyball team on Sunday. His compatriots lost 3:2 to France in their first group match. Djokovic himself had made a successful start to the tournament with a victory in the first round against Australia's Matthew Ebden.
