Brazil fail to beat Colombia 1-1 at the Copa America in the USA. Colombia finishes Group D as winners. Brazil will face Uruguay in the quarter-finals.
In Santa Clara (California), the Seleçao had to settle for a draw for the second time in the tournament (after a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica in the opener). Brazil took the lead against Colombia after just twelve minutes thanks to a superb free-kick from Raphinha, but conceded an equalizer through Daniel Munoz in first-half stoppage time.
In this hard-fought game (with 33 fouls), Brazil struggled in the second half. Another free kick from Raphinha (outside post) and two opportunities in stoppage time provided Brazil with a splash of color. But the Brazilians looked bereft of ideas against Colombia, who are unbeaten in international matches since the start of 2022 and a defeat to Argentina.
As a result, Colombia reached the quarter-finals as group winners and will meet Panama there. Brazil will face Uruguay, who won three convincing matches in the preliminary round. Champions League winner Vinicius Jr. will also be missing against Uruguay, having picked up his second yellow card of the tournament against Colombia.
In the second Group D match, Costa Rica beat Paraguay 2:1, which was not enough to progress.
The Copa America quarter-finals begin on Thursday with Lionel Messi's Argentina taking on Ecuador in Houston, Texas.
