Ireland have appointed Icelander Heimir Hallgrimsson as their new national team coach. The 57-year-old replaces interim coach John O'Shea, as announced by the Irish Football Association.
Hallgrimsson celebrated remarkable success as Iceland's national coach from 2013 to 2018. He led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2016 European Championship together with Lars Lagerbäck from Sweden, who had the same rights. England were sensationally defeated 2:1 in the round of 16. In the months that followed, Iceland also managed to qualify for a World Cup for the first time under Hallgrimsson.
Most recently, the Icelander was under contract as national coach in Jamaica. He resigned after three defeats at the current Copa America.
