Who will be the top scorer at the European Championship? Six players are currently ahead in the rankings, but only two of them can still score in Sunday's final. Both play in the Bundesliga.
The record has stood since the 2012 European Championship, when six players shared the title of top scorer at the European Championship with three goals each. The same phenomenon could now be repeated at this European Championship, which ends with the final between Spain and England on Sunday in Berlin (21:00/ARD and MagentaTV).
The starting position
Cody Gakpo (Netherlands), Harry Kane (England), Georges Mikautadze (Georgia), Jamal Musiala (Germany), Dani Olmo (Spain) and Ivan Schranz (Slovakia): These six professionals are currently leading the race for the "Golden Boot", the award for the best European Championship goalscorer. When asked, UEFA confirmed that the number of goals scored is the only criterion that counts. It is therefore more likely that there will be six or more top scorers at this European Championship than that assists or minutes played will be taken into account.
The favorites
Bundesliga professionals Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) and Dani Olmo (RB Leipzig) are the only two players from the leading six who can still score in Sunday's final. Spain's Olmo also tops the unofficial scorers list at this European Championship, having set up two goals in addition to his three. Two other finalists also have a good chance with two goals each: England's Jude Bellingham and Spain's Fabian Ruiz.
Dani Olmo
The 26-year-old midfielder is facing the most important days of his career so far. He is in the final of a major tournament for the first time. And a release clause is still valid until July 20, allowing a major club to buy him out of his contract with RB Leipzig for 60 million euros. Olmo is only marginally interested in becoming the top scorer at this European Championship: "I don't care whether I score the goal or Unai Simón (goalkeeper), as long as we win the game."
Harry Kane
England's captain has yet to win a major title in his career - but has won all the more individual honors. In his first season for Bayern Munich, the 30-year-old immediately became the Bundesliga's top scorer. He also scored the most goals at the 2018 World Cup in Russia (6). Now he finally wants to win a major trophy. "It will be incredibly difficult. But we only have one game left to make history," said Kane ahead of the final.
The history
With 14 goals, Cristiano Ronaldo (39) leads the all-time scoring list of all European Championship tournaments by a large margin. The 39-year-old Portuguese has taken part in six European Championships and was one of the top scorers at each tournament in 2021 (5 goals) and 2012 (3 goals). The record for the most goals scored in just one European Championship is held similarly unchallenged by France's Michel Platini: in 1984, he scored nine times in just five games.
