FC Lugano showed that they are ruthless against FC Basel and won 2:1. It was the Ticino side's second win in their second game and a negative record for FCB.
FC Lugano do not need much of the game to make their presence felt. For a good half hour at St. Jakob-Park, there was hardly anything to see offensively from the visitors until two passes were enough to unhinge the Basel defense in the 68th minute. Daniel Dos Santos, who had arrived from Thun, provided the assist and Kacper Przybylko from Poland, who was making only his seventh appearance for Lugano, scored the decisive goal. It was Przybylko's second goal of the season.
It was a bitter second defeat of the season for FC Basel, who invested a lot after going 1-0 down early on through Ignacio Aliseda (8'). The 1:1 in the 50th minute by Léo Leroy, who joined from Montpellier this season, was a scant reward for Basel's impeccable commitment. The fact that Benjamin Kololli and Thierno Barry, two attacking mainstays, were missing was not obvious. Both had to take a seat in the stands for indiscipline.
Historic false start
The upward trend compared to the first game last weekend was clearly visible, but the disappointment remains in the bare figures. For the first time since the Super League was introduced in 2003, Basel are without points after two rounds. Next Saturday, FCB will host Grasshoppers.
There was a brief return to better times for the Basel fans during the break in the game: Michael Lang, a veteran player who experienced the club's successful times, was bid farewell. The full-back won the league twice with FCB and the cup once. Now the contract with the 33-year-old has been terminated.
Man of the Match: Anto Grgic
"He takes the tempo out of the game at the right moments and is the control center in the Lugano game." (blue Sport commentator Manuel Iseli)

Fabio Celestini rejects first extension offer from FCB president Degen
Fabio Celestini joined FC Basel last October to help the former serial champions stay in the league. He signed a contract until the end of the season. Club boss David Degen wanted to extend his contract before it expired.
Celestini turned down the first offer in February. "David Degen told me before the quarter-final against Lugano (FCB were eliminated, ed.) that we absolutely had to extend my contract. I refused. Because I had come to Basel to save the season, and we hadn't achieved that yet," Celestini said on Friday at the media conference before the second game of the season, according to "BaZ".
After the bitter Cup exit in the penalty shoot-out against Lugano, FCB's results woes continued. They lost at home to relegated Lausanne and went down 5-1 away to YB. First Degen's extension offer, then three consecutive defeats - not the best prospects for Celestini staying at FCB.
But Degen was not blinded by the crisis and approached Celestini again the day after the YB defeat with his wish to continue working with him. The 48-year-old then agreed. "When your president says he wants to extend your contract after three defeats and a 1:5, he really believes in you."
