Atlético Madrid live up to their role as favorites against FC Brugge in the Champions League and advance to the round of 16. Bayer Leverkusen and Newcastle United also make it through to the play-offs.
Six days after the 3:3 in Belgium, Atlético Madrid beat Brugge 4:1 at home in the second leg. The Norwegian Alexander Sörloth shone in the second leg of the round of 16 with three goals. The 30-year-old showed the efficiency that the Belgian cup winners lacked. The latter had numerous chances to score, especially in the first half, but only took advantage of the one created by Ecuadorian defender Joel Ordoñez in the 36th minute to make it 1:1. Shortly after the break, American Johnny Cardoso put the Spaniards back in front. The last two goals were scored in the final quarter of an hour. Atlético Madrid will continue their campaign in the round of 16 against Liverpool or Tottenham. The draw for the remaining knockout phase will take place on Friday.
Leverkusen and Newcastle confident
Bayer Leverkusen are also through to the round of 16. The Bundesliga side left nothing to chance after their 2-0 away win and were always in control in the goalless second leg against Olympiakos Piraeus. Leverkusen will now face either FC Bayern or Arsenal London in the round of 16.
Newcastle United had already set the course for the round of 16 with a 6:1 away win at Qarabag in the first leg. In the second leg, the English side took a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes and then visibly picked up the pace. In the end, Newcastle won the second leg 3:2 and progressed to the round of 16 with an aggregate score of 9:3.
