Morgane Métraux is still at the top of the leaderboard after three rounds of the Olympic golf tournament. However, the French-speaking Swiss has to let New Zealand's Lydia Ko catch up.

Morgane Métraux passed her first test. Never before has she led a tournament with such strong players at such a major tournament. The 27-year-old held her nerve: She didn't play quite as well as on Wednesday (70 strokes) and Thursday (66 strokes). But she still finished the third round in line with the course standard (71).

Métraux had a phenomenal finish. With an "eagle" (2 under par) on the last hole, she caught up with the leaders again. She had had to relinquish the lead after 30 hours at the top of the leaderboard on Friday afternoon because she made three bogeys (1 over par) on holes 10 to 13.

At this stage, it seemed as if the lead was holding her back. Putts suddenly came up short on the greens. Morgane Métraux, the number 137 in the world, no longer attacked. However, two shots behind the leader, world number 22 Lydia Ko, Métraux regained her attacking spirit.

The second part of the test will start on Saturday afternoon. Morgane Métraux will once again start as the leader in the very last flight - together with Lydia Ko and world number 9 Rose Zhang (USA), who worked her way up twelve places and is now just two shots behind. Twelve players are separated by just six strokes, including Nelly Korda, the world No. 1. Without her quadruple bogey (4 over par) on Thursday, Korda would have fought her way to the top after Wednesday's disappointing opening round.

At least 20 golfers are still dreaming of the medals before the final round. Albane Valenzuela, who is in 32nd place eleven strokes behind after three rounds, is not among them.
