  • Xherdan Shaqiri scores a dream goal against Scotland.
  • It's his tenth goal at a major tournament. Shaqiri becomes a living legend.
  • Shaqiri is already looking ahead and hoping to upset the Germans on Sunday.

The numbers are crazy: at the 2014 World Cup, Xherdan Shaqiri scored a hat-trick against Honduras at the age of 23 to fire the national team into the last 16. At Euro 2016, he scored a wonderful side-footed goal against Poland. He also scored at the 2018 World Cup, the 2021 European Championship, the 2022 World Cup and now the 2024 European Championship. No one else has achieved this - anywhere in Europe.

His ten goals at major tournaments are now a mark that makes him a living national team legend. And Murat Yakin was right to bench him once against Hungary (3:1) and then bring him on against Scotland (1:1).

"That's just Shaq," says Yann Sommer. At first he thought he shouldn't shoot directly - and then he smashes it in like that.

Shaqiri himself commented on the statistics after the game: "It's very special, I'm proud of it. I'm always proud to wear the Swiss jersey on the pitch. It's a very nice feeling, it's always special when you score a goal for Switzerland, for your country."

Shaq continued: "I'm happy that the ball went in. I took a risk and made the most of my opponent's mistake." He found out he was playing the day before the game.

Germany now awaits on Sunday in the duel for group victory. They have a leg up on qualifying for the round of 16 because the Swiss goal difference (+2) is much better than that of the Scots (-4). Shaqiri: "Germany will be a good acid test for us. We'll be facing another opponent. We also want to annoy the Germans, that's for sure."

Shaqiri is also asked whether he will still play at the 2026 World Cup and extend his record: "That's still a long way off. I'm only thinking about the next game at the moment."

Will he be allowed to play again then? Purely in terms of goals, he has made a case for it.
