Guatemala has won its first ever gold medal at the Olympic Games. The Central American country has Adriana Ruano Oliva to thank for this.
The 29-year-old won in trap, also known as clay target shooting, ahead of Italy's Silvana Stanco and Australia's Penny Smith. Three years ago, Ruano Oliva had finished 26th in Tokyo.
The day before, the trap discipline had already caused jubilation in the Guatemalan camp. Jean Pierre Brol Cardenas came third in the men's event. This means that Guatemala has already celebrated twice as often at the current Games as before. Between 1952 and 2023, Guatemala had only won one medal at the Olympic Games.
