Werner Schlegel is no match for him at the Schwarzsee-Schwinget. The 21-year-old from Toggenburg impressively asserts himself at the festival, which is packed with wrestling titans.
In the final round, Schlegel puts Adrian Walther on his back. Prior to this, he wins spectacularly against Matthias Aeschbacher with a flat throw, among others, and the fight against Fabian Staudenmann ends with a knockdown.
"I can hardly believe it," says Schlegel on "SRF" after his victory at the Bergkranzfest in the canton of Fribourg. Before the final round, he says: "I didn't get up with a good feeling today." However, Schlegel concludes by saying that he had gotten better and better at the festival. "It's simply beautiful."
Walther gets off to a flying start
Schlegel's opponent in the final round, Walther, gets the day off to a flying start. He pushes overwhelming Samuel Giger into the sawdust, followed by four more victories - the first time he loses to Schlegel.
After his defeat in the first round, Giger is able to turn things around. With five victories, he ranks second. "I'm satisfied with my performance," says Giger after the event. He is also pleased that the day's victory was clinched by a teammate: "I really congratulate Werner. He swung really well."
Giger misses out on the "Bergfest Grand Slam", eastern Swiss slow down Staudenmann
Giger had the chance to achieve the "Bergfest Grand Slam" at the Schwarzsee-Schwinget - the second wrestler ever to do so. Giger has triumphed at five out of six Bergkranzfests so far, but has yet to win at Schwarzsee. That remains the case. Next year he will have the next chance to draw level with Martin Grab.
Like Giger, Staudenmann also missed out on the final round. He lost the first round to Armon Orlik from Graubünden and also missed out on points against Schlegel (who was defeated). In the final ranking, he finished in 5th place.
