There is no way around the US women's basketball team. In the 329th and final competition of the Summer Games in Paris, they beat the French 67:66 in a final that went down to the wire.

As in the men's final the previous evening, in which the US stars led by LeBron James and Stephen Curry won in a close and thrilling game lasting over 40 minutes, the French women's team also demanded everything from the top favorites.

The hosts led 53:51 with five minutes to go before the Americans made slightly fewer mistakes and managed to turn the game around and win their eighth Olympic triumph in a row.

The French, who had the chance to equalize in the final seconds at 64:67, were also unlucky. Gabby Williams hit her shot from long range - but the French top scorer was on the three-point line, meaning it was only enough for two points to make the final score 66:67.

The most successful scorer in the final for the USA, who are now unbeaten in 61 games in a row at the Summer Games, was Aja Wilson with 21 points. Williams scored 19 points for the French team.

Bronze went to the Australians, who beat Belgium 85:81 in the game for third place.
