After the dramatic victory over France in the quarter-final (35:34 n.V.), Germany also wins the semi-final against Spain by the narrow margin of 25:24. The Germans face Denmark in the final for gold.
The Germans are unbeatable in this Olympic tournament. France led 29:28 in the quarter-final with the throw-off at the center circle six seconds before the end - and still lost. The fairytale continued in the semi-final: Germany were almost permanently in the lead against the Spaniards. Only in the final did Spain suddenly lead 23:22 and 24:23, but in front of over 20,000 spectators at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille - the same venue where Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka won the Davis Cup ten years ago - German goalkeeper Andreas Wolff once again excelled in the final.
Wolff saved everything in the last seven minutes. The Spaniards had chances to extend their lead. But Wolff made 22 saves to ensure that Germany won by one goal in the end.
The Germans will not go into the gold medal match against Denmark, who beat Slovenia 31:30, as favorites. Denmark won the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The Danes have also been world champions three times in the last five years (2019, 2021, 2023). Germany is in the Olympic final for the third time. The only gold medal to date was won by Germany in men's handball in Moscow in 1980.
