Without people like Stefano Pavoni, musicians would be at a loss. The sound engineer ensures the right sound in the ears of the artists. A year ago, he saved Diana Ross' performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

How loud is the guitar? And where do the drums sound better, to the right or left?

At the Auditorium Stravinski in Montreux,Stefano Pavoni demonstrates what the work of a monitor sound engineer looks like.

He leans on his mixing console, moves sound controls, presses buttons, switches speakers on and off.

Without people like Pavoni, most of the musicians at the Montreux Jazz Festival would be at a loss. The sound engineer ensures the right sound in the ears of the artists.

Pavoni: "A huge task, but we did it"

Last year, Stefano Pavoni saved the performance of soul great Diana Ross in Montreux.

"The morning before her performance, I got the message," says the sound engineer, "that the plane with her crew and stage equipment would be arriving late."

In reality, this meant Pavoni had to mix Diana Ross' entire band.

It was a great team effort - not least because only one person from Diana Ross's team was present. "A huge task, but we got it done."
