The "Bäseler-Crew" ensures that the Gurten is spotlessly clean again, even after wild party nights. We accompanied the team of volunteers - and lent a hand ourselves.
No time? blue News summarizes for you
- The Gurtenfestival is taking place for the 40th time on Bern's local mountain from July 12 to 16.
- The "Bäseler crew" makes sure the site is clean after the big party.
- Our presenter Daniel Fanslau doesn't let himself get carried away and lends a hand as a "Bäseler".
They get up when most Gurten festival-goers are sleeping off the effects of the previous night. The so-called "Bäseler crew" consists of volunteers - many of them students, pens or older staff.
They make sure that Bern's local mountain is sparkling clean again the next morning after the big party.
It's not always fun, says manager Bruno Jordi: "When it rains heavily and constantly, I sometimes have to motivate people a little. The best thing I can do is remind them that there's a big breakfast buffet waiting for them after work."
As a reward, the helpers also receive a 5-day festival pass for themselves and a companion. Nevertheless, it is not easy to recruit new people for the crew, says Jordi.
Our presenter cuts a fine figure as a "Bäseler"
This is somewhat surprising, as sustainability and environmental activism are currently in vogue. One crew member can't resist a little side-swipe: "With all the waste, I sometimes have to think about the environmental activists. They stick themselves to the ground, then they come up here and leave everything lying around..."
At least our team can't be accused of this. Our presenter Daniel Fanslau emphasizes that a festival can only work together - and grabs a broom to mop the floor in the food tent.
According to "Bäseler" boss Jordi, he has even shown real talent: "Well done - we can use you!"
