Cuban music legend Omara Portuondo of the famous Buena Vista Social Club is ending her career, according to her son. "We feel it is appropriate to announce Omara's final retirement from the stage," explained Portuondo's son.

The 93-year-old had shown signs of exhaustion and disorientation at a concert in Barcelona on Wednesday, her son explained on Thursday (local time), adding that she had had to be taken off the stage. Portuondo is doing well, her son added. She is being looked after by her doctor. Her last performance will be on Sunday in the Hungarian capital Budapest. Portuondo will not perform, but will appear to receive "the love and applause" of her fans.
Portuondo was born in Havana on October 29, 1930. She became known all over the world through her participation in the Buena Vista Social Club. The 93-year-old won a Latin Grammy in 2009 for her album "Gracias" and another in 2023 for "Vida".
