Germany Five works shortlisted for the Wilhelm Raabe Prize

Three female and two male authors have been shortlisted for the 2024 Wilhelm Raabe Prize for Literature, which comes with prize money of 30,000 euros.

Among them is Saša Stanišić with "If the widow wants to be addressed, she places the watering can on the grave with the spout facing forward", according to the city of Braunschweig. Ulrike Edschmid with "Die letzte Patientin", Roman Ehrlich with "Videotime", Maren Kames with "Hasenprosa" and Judith Kuckart with "Die Welt zwischen den Nachrichten" are also nominated.

The north-west German city of Braunschweig and Deutschlandfunk are joint sponsors of the prize. The Raabe Prize is awarded annually to a work written in German. The award ceremony will take place on November 3, 2024 - in the Kleines Haus of the Staatstheater in Braunschweig.

The award is intended to commemorate the storyteller Wilhelm Raabe, who died in Braunschweig in 1910 and is one of the most important representatives of poetic realism.

Last year, the writer Judith Hermann received the award for her autobiographical book "Wir hätten uns alles gesagt".
