The Aargau cantonal government wants a study to examine the benefits of planting more trees on public land. In doing so, it is supporting a demand from the cantonal parliament.

In a postulate, councillors from the Greens, SP, GLP, Mitte, EVP and SVP had demanded that the canton of Aargau plant more trees on public land. Not only in building zones, but also outside settlement areas. The members of parliament demanded a concept for this.

Planting native, climate-resistant trees on public land not only contributes to greater biodiversity, but also to improving the quality of life in Aargau. As a landowner, the canton of Aargau could also act as a role model.

The cantonal government agrees with the thrust of the postulate, as it writes in its response published on Friday. The structure plan already contains guidelines for the authorities to implement climate-adapted settlement development. Green spaces and trees are already being promoted and integrated into road construction projects.

The government wants to commission a study to assess the potential of trees in public areas owned by the canton. A report is to be submitted to the Grand Council within two years.
