This is not how the passengers on a LATAM flight imagined their journey to São Paulo. On Tuesday morning, the Boeing 777 was about to take off from Malpensa Airport in Milan when it hit the ground with its tail.
A surveillance camera captured the incident and shows the plane dragging on the runway for several seconds. The video shows how the tailstrike produces a lot of smoke. Eyewitnesses reported to the "Corriere della Sera" that the tail also sprayed sparks.
The plane suffered material damage, but still took off. After about an hour, however, the plane had to make an emergency landing at Malpensa. There were no injuries.
Reasons unclear
As the Italian newspaper reports, the Italian aviation authority has already launched an investigation. The reasons are still completely unclear.
"It could have been a technical problem or an incorrect calculation of the aircraft's weight," an experienced pilot told Corriere della Sera.
It was thanks to the pilots on board that a catastrophe could have been avoided. "Aborting the take-off would probably have had fatal consequences," concludes the pilot quoted.
