In the eastern Afghan province of Nangahar, almost 40 people have died in a storm with heavy rainfall. Around 350 people were injured, according to a spokesman for the Ministry of Health.

The number of victims could still rise. According to the authorities, the provincial capital Jalalabad has also been affected. According to the Afghan news channel Tolonews, the wounded were admitted to a local hospital.

Large family dies due to collapsing roof

A video shared by the Kabul police spokesperson on the online platform X shows a flooded village and violent gusts of wind. According to the authorities, most of the houses in at least one affected area have been destroyed, but they have not yet given an exact number. Around 60 electricity pylons were knocked down by the storm. In the Surkhrud district, an entire extended family was killed by a collapsing roof.

It was only in May of this year that around 350 people lost their lives in heavy flooding in northern Afghanistan. According to the UN Children's Fund, Unicef, almost 8,000 houses were also destroyed.
