According to local media reports, almost 90 snake attacks have been reported in the southern Sudanese state of Bahr el-Ghazal alone following the start of the rainy season with torrential rainfall.

The radio station Radio Tamzuj reported, citing local authorities, that four people died from snake bites. In addition, 83 people have been injured by snake bites in recent weeks.

Especially in remote villages, it is difficult to provide patients with antivenom in time after being bitten by poisonous snakes. Where houses are under water, the snakes can be washed in, and on flooded roads the animals are often noticed too late.

Bahr el-Ghazal is located in the north-west of South Sudan on the border with Sudan, where severe flooding has also been taking place for weeks. The rainy season is yet to begin in other regions of South Sudan. Experts are expecting the worst floods in decades.
