A car caught fire on the A13 highway near Oberriet SG on Wednesday evening. The driver was able to get out of the vehicle in time. Due to the short-term closure of the highway, two rear-end collisions also occurred afterwards, in which a 48-year-old man suffered minor injuries.

A 37-year-old man was driving on the A13 highway in the direction of Oberriet shortly before nine o'clock. After the highway tunnel, he noticed a strange smell and drove onto the emergency lane, according to the St. Gallen cantonal police.

When the driver got out of the car, it was already on fire. The emergency services were able to extinguish the fire quickly. The cause is thought to be a technical defect. The car was a total loss
