The Federal Council rejects the popular initiative "Yes to fair federal taxes for married couples too" without a counter-proposal. The popular initiative contradicts the introduction of the individual taxation demanded by Parliament, the Federal Council announced on Wednesday.

The latter is currently pending in parliament as an indirect counter-proposal to the popular initiative "For individual taxation regardless of marital status (tax justice initiative)" by the FDP women, it added. However, the adoption of the popular initiative launched by the Center Party would rule out the introduction of individual taxation without a new constitutional amendment.

The popular initiative launched by the Center Party would abolish additional burdens for married couples ("marriage penalty"). However, discrimination against unmarried couples ("marriage bonus") would remain, according to the national government. Depending on the design of the model, the federal government would also suffer a "significant loss of revenue", it added.
