From July 1, a price scale will apply, which means that until September 30, cruise passengers will have to pay an additional 20 euros (around 18.70 francs) for a visit to the islands of Mykonos and Santorini; the remaining islands and ports will charge 5 euros per person, as the Ministry of Tourism informed the German Press Agency. In the low season and in winter, however, the prices should only be a few euros per visitor.
Ministry: tourists should not be put off
The additional fee is not intended to scare tourists away, as the Ministry of Tourism emphasizes. The rush to the particularly popular islands will remain high. The additional fee is also unlikely to deter cruise tourists from a planned visit, it added.
Sustainable tourism in demand
The aim of the fee is to invest the money in projects that benefit sustainable tourism. This includes modernizing ports and improving the local infrastructure. For example, guests should not have to wait during their visit and be better guided around the islands. The government also wants to promote the use of smaller cruise ships to ease the situation.
According to initial estimates, the new "entrance fees" are expected to generate around 50 million euros. The aim is to better organize the trips and island visits of the ships and their guests in advance so that several giant cruise ships do not land on the sometimes very small islets at the same time.
