Brazilian ex-president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for attempting a coup. The Supreme Court in Brasilia declared the sentence final. This means that the lawyers of the former head of state (2019-2022) can no longer appeal, as Brazilian media reported in unison. This clears the way for the execution of the 27-year prison sentence for attempted coup d'état. The court must now set a date and place for the start of the sentence. Due to his poor state of health, it was initially unclear whether Bolsonaro would have to serve his sentence in prison.

Bolsonaro had already been preventively arrested at the weekend after attempting to tamper with his electronic ankle monitor. He admitted to having manipulated the monitoring device with a soldering iron. Federal judge Alexandre de Moraes spoke of a "concrete flight risk" and a "threat to public order". The 70-year-old has been under house arrest since August due to violations of court orders.
Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison by the Supreme Court in September for an attempted coup following his election defeat against incumbent head of state Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
