A ferry carrying almost 150 people ran aground between the German Baltic Sea islands of Hiddensee and Rügen on Wednesday and had to be towed free by sea rescuers.

According to the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) in Bremen, no one was injured. There was no danger for the 142 passengers and four crew members, as the sea was calm. However, the ferry's journey time was extended by three hours.

Apparently a technical defect

According to the sea rescuers, the approximately 40-metre-long ferry was on its way from Vitte on Hiddensee to Schaprode on Rügen through the Schaproder Bodden, a shallow lagoon between the two islands belonging to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Apparently due to a technical defect, it ran aground, explained the DGzRS. After being towed free by a rescue cruiser, the ferry reached Schaprode under its own power.
