Several Muslim states have insisted on compliance with the ceasefire between Israel and the Islamist Hamas. They also agreed that steps must be taken towards a two-state solution in order to achieve lasting peace, said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan after a meeting of foreign ministers from seven predominantly Muslim states in Istanbul. A two-state solution means that Israel and an independent Palestinian state exist peacefully side by side.

No concrete progress regarding the implementation of US President Donald Trump's peace plan was announced. In addition to the disarmament of Hamas, the second phase of the plan also provides for the exclusion of Hamas from political participation in the Gaza Strip - both major conflict issues. In addition, a force of international soldiers is to be formed to stabilize the Gaza Strip. A transitional government of Palestinian technocrats is also included in the peace plan.
UN mandate for international force
Hamas is prepared to transfer the administration of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian committee, emphasized Fidan. The deployment of the international peacekeeping force (ISF) would require a mandate from the UN Security Council, he continued.
The foreign ministers' meeting was attended by Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Qatar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
Egypt, along with Qatar an important mediator between Israel and the Islamist Hamas, did not take part in the talks due to other commitments. Turkey has good contacts with Hamas and played an important role in mediating the ceasefire that came into force on October 10.
