Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz urges progress in the Middle East peace process. Following a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Aqaba, Merz said: "We share the relief that the ceasefire in Gaza has now been stabilizing for two months. But now we must also succeed in entering the second phase. This includes finally removing the basis for Hamas' terror." This also means that the still precarious humanitarian situation of the civilian population in Gaza must improve quickly and noticeably. "More humanitarian aid is needed before winter."

Merz continued: "We must not lose sight of the situation in the West Bank. We must keep the path to Palestinian statehood open. That is why there must be no annexation steps in the West Bank." US President Donald Trump had also repeatedly emphasized that he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank.

For a two-state solution

Merz flew on from Jordan to Jerusalem, where he will be received by Israeli President Izchak Herzog. A meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is planned for Sunday.

Merz said: "We want to help lay the foundations for a new order in the entire Middle East." It must be an order in which Israelis, Palestinians and their Arab neighbors can live in lasting peace, freedom and security. Merz reiterated that Germany was in favor of a two-state solution. Negotiations on this should begin soon. He would discuss this with Netanyahu.

The Chancellor praised Jordan's "positive role" in stabilizing the entire region in difficult times. There is intensive security policy cooperation.
