According to the authorities, a suicide bomber in Aleppo, Syria, killed a member of the security forces and injured three other people on New Year's Eve.

The attacker very probably had ideological or organizational links to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia, said a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior on Syrian state television. He had apparently wanted to infiltrate an area in Aleppo inhabited by Christians. There was initially no claim of responsibility for the attack by IS or any other group.

The security officer became aware of the perpetrator in the center of Aleppo. When he searched him, the man detonated an explosive belt. A police officer and two other security forces were injured, according to intelligence circles.

The attack took place amid the ongoing tense situation in Syria. Last week, several people were killed and injured in an attack at a mosque in Homs. There has also been sectarian violence in various parts of the country in recent months, with hundreds of people killed in some cases. Security measures have recently been tightened in large cities such as Damascus and Aleppo.

Syria's ruler Bashar al-Assad was overthrown just over a year ago. The country continues to be plagued by violence and tensions between sectarian and ethnic groups.
