He praised the "incredible resilience" of the European partner.
According to the government, the sanctions package is the largest since the early months of the war. It is aimed in particular at the financing of the invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The pipeline giant PJSC Transneft, 175 companies and 48 oil tankers in the so-called shadow fleet were among those subject to sanctions. This mostly includes older ships with which Russia is trying to circumvent sanctions, according to the West.
It is not a war that is far removed from the UK, Starmer said. It is Putin who is standing in the way of a possible peace. The British sanctions are also intended to affect companies that supply parts for drones. Banks and companies from the nuclear energy and gas industries are also on the list.
