School space A children's home is being built in Bern's Rossfeld district

Because the number of children in Bern's Rossfeld district is increasing, more school and childcare space is needed. This is now being created in the former buildings of the Matthäus parish. Among other things, it will house basic levels, a daycare center and a library.

The city of Bern has acquired a church with sacristy, a former parish hall and a former rectory from the parish. The parish hall and rectory will now be converted for school purposes, as announced by the City of Bern's President's Office on Friday.

In future, the facility will be called "Kinderhaus Rossfeld". Voters approved a loan of 16.1 million Swiss francs in June 2024.

Construction work is set to begin next week. The building ensemble will retain its current character both inside and out. The single-storey intermediate structure connecting the two buildings is expected to be completed in January 2025.

The children's center is scheduled to open in August 2026.
