Urs Ackermann from Balsthal SO will become cantonal chemist and head of cantonal food inspection in Solothurn from December. The 59-year-old former "highest Solothurn resident" was appointed by the cantonal government on Tuesday.

Ackermann succeeds Martin Kohler, who is retiring at the end of the year after 17 years of service, as announced by the State Chancellery.

Ackermann is known in the canton for his political commitment. He sat on the Solothurn Cantonal Council for the CVP from 2013 to 2019. He presided over it in 2018 and was thus formally the "highest Solothurn citizen".

The biology graduate and federally certified food chemist is currently still head of the laboratory and deputy cantonal chemist for the canton of Bern, according to a press release.
