With an action in front of the St. Gallen government building on Monday afternoon, trade unions and staff associations announced their opposition to a liberalization of cantonal store opening hours. The issue is on the agenda for the September session.

In front of the entrance to the government building with the cantonal council chamber, trade unionists handed out flyers at midday demanding "No longer store opening hours!". The sales assistants in the local stores deserved to get off work.

The target of the action was the cantonal councillors, who were on their way to the council chamber for the start of the session. Later in the afternoon, a decision will be made on amendments to the law on closing days and store opening hours.

A moderate proposal by the government to extend the closing time by one hour until 8 p.m. is on the table. The preliminary consultation committee, on the other hand, wants to extend the cantonal opening hours from Monday to Saturday until 10 pm.

If the committee's variant prevails in the council, it is clear to them that a referendum will have to be held against it, explained Alexandra Akeret, SP cantonal councillor and VPOD regional secretary, to Keystone-SDA.
