A 64-year-old construction worker suffered leg injuries in a work accident in Schachen near Reute AR on Wednesday afternoon. The man fell into a 2.8 meter deep excavation pit. An ambulance took him to hospital.

The worker was sweeping gravel around the pit and tripped in the process, the Appenzell Ausserrhoden cantonal police wrote in a statement on Thursday. The fire department was called out to rescue the accident victim.
