On the last vacation weekend before school starts in many cantons, numerous travelers are returning to Switzerland by car. Accordingly, the traffic jam in front of the Gotthard south portal reached a length of 9 kilometers on Saturday morning.

As reported by the Viasuisse traffic service, cars had to wait around one and a half hours between Faido TI and the Airolo TI rest area to enter the 16.9-kilometre tunnel.

According to Viasuisse, the tunnel was temporarily closed in both directions at 9 a.m. because a motorhome had to be towed away after an accident with a broken-down vehicle. Later, the entrance at the north portal was closed due to safety construction work. As a result, there was a 9-kilometre-long traffic jam until around midday.

On Monday, school starts in the cantons of Aarau, Appenzell-Inner- and Ausserrhoden, Basel-Stadt and -Land, the German-speaking part of Bern, Glarus, Graubünden, Obwalden, St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Schwyz, Solothurn and Thurgau.
