President of the Swiss Confederation Viola Amherd (center) visited the Swiss National Costume Festival in Zurich on Sunday - not in a traditional Valais costume, however, but in a pink trouser suit.

Unfortunately, she couldn't keep up with her business look here, she admitted in her short speech. Her predecessor Alain Berset had it easier last summer in Zurich. "He wore a feather boa and was already dressed appropriately," she said, alluding to Berset's appearance at the Street Parade.

At the traditional costume festival, however, the effort was much greater. "I admire your traditional costumes all the more," said Amherd to the traditional costume associations and groups on Bürkliplatz.

"Traditional costumes are shining brightly this weekend." The traditional costumes from all regions are a celebration of diversity. "At a time when people are polarizing and settling scores everywhere, it is all the more important to put something like this together."

Zurich mayor in Bernese Sunday costume

Zurich Mayor Corine Mauch (SP) used the three-day event to wear her great-great-great-grandmother's Bernese Sunday costume. She had not worn the heirloom for a long time, the last time being at her graduation ceremony at ETH.

"It may well be that I didn't do everything correctly," she asked the traditional costume people to apologize beforehand - knowing that they were looking very closely this weekend.

Traditional costumes are a science in themselves. Every clasp and every piece of jewelry has to be in the right place, the shoes are always black and the apron is, of course, perfectly ironed.

Street parade without bass

Guests at the official ceremony on Sunday included government representatives from 16 cantons as well as numerous members of parliament. The highlight on Sunday was the colorful parade of traditional groups through the city center. "For once a street parade without booming basses," said Mauch.

Around 100,000 visitors attended the three-day festival in Zurich. The event was "cheerful and peaceful" throughout, said Max Binder, OC President and former Zurich SVP National Councillor. There were no incidents. The police officers mainly posed for selfies with the people in traditional costume.

The city of Zurich hosted the traditional costume festival, which takes place every twelve years, for the third time after 1939 and 1974.
