In the middle of the northern German city of Hamburg, the discovery of a World War II bomb on Sunday night triggered a major operation by the fire department. The emergency services were able to defuse the aerial bomb, as the fire department announced on Platform X.

Because of the 500-pound aerial bomb, a radius of 300 meters was evacuated in the Schanzenviertel, a nightlife district of the Hanseatic city, the Hamburg fire department announced on Saturday evening on the X online service. A few hours later, the fire department gave the all-clear at around midnight: "The aerial bomb in Sternschanze was successfully defused!" it said on X.

According to a fire department spokesperson, the bomb had been found at a depth of around six meters while checking a building site. According to Hamburg police, the evacuation measures took a few hours, partly because a retirement home bordered the exclusion radius.

220 people in emergency accommodation

According to the fire department, emergency accommodation was set up in a secondary school for the people who had to leave their homes. Around 220 people came to the emergency shelter, according to the fire department spokesperson. He was unable to say how many people were affected by the evacuations in total.

On Saturday, a World War II bomb in Cologne had already necessitated an extensive evacuation operation. Following the evacuation of numerous residential buildings and several clinics in the cathedral city, the US aerial bomb discovered on Wednesday was detonated in a controlled manner.
