The bronze medal in the women's floor exercise at the Olympic Games in Paris has to be re-awarded. Instead of Jordan Chile, it goes to Ana Barbosu, decides the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld an appeal by the Romanian Gymnastics Federation. The appeal contested the fact that the application for a subsequent change to the score for the American Jordan Chiles was submitted four seconds too late. As a result of this decision, Ana Barbosu from Romania moved up to third place with 13.700 points.
The CAS ad hoc chamber determined that Chiles' original score of 13.666 points must be reinstated. In the floor final last Monday, the US team had lodged an appeal against Chile's score. After reviewing the video footage, the jury decided to recognize one element and adjust the difficulty score upwards. The decision was only made after the placings had been announced. At this point, Barbosu had already celebrated her 3rd place in the hall with the national flag over her shoulder.
The Romanian federation then lodged an appeal with CAS on the grounds that the US team had requested the correction after one minute and four seconds instead of within one minute of the announcement of the ranking. The CAS agreed and declared the upward correction ineffective. The floor competition was won by Brazilian Rebeca Andrade with 14.166 points ahead of US superstar Simone Biles (14.133).
