  • Austrian fans cause a scandal with xenophobic slogans ahead of the European Championship round of 16 final.
  • The scene is broadcast live on SRF ahead of the Austria-Turkey match.
  • The incident is reminiscent of xenophobic shouting on the German island of Sylt.

In the pre-match coverage of the European Championship round of 16 between Austria and Turkey, Swiss television actually wanted to pick up on the good mood among Austrian supporters, but a scandal broke out during a live broadcast.

As the camera pans through the Austria fans gathered in Leipzig, some red-white-red supporters are clearly heard chanting the slogan "Foreigners out" to the tune of "L'Amour Toujour" by DJ Gigi D'Agostino.

Incident similar to the one on Sylt

The racist slurring of the party hit had recently caused consternation after several party guests at a bar on the German island of Sylt shouted racist slurs.

Similar cases were then also reported in Austria. Austria's governing parties condemned these incidents. "We have a historic responsibility to distance ourselves crystal clear from such activities," said Social Affairs and Health Minister Johannes Rauch from the Green Party.

Apparently, however, racist slogans are still a problem in Austria.
