Liverpool fell behind in the 3rd minute, but then turned the game around and won 3:1 away at AC Milan.
Liverpool FC have won their first game in the Champions League since the Jürgen Klopp era. The English team of new coach Arne Slot deservedly won 3:1 (2:1) at AC Milan and showed a strong improvement after the surprising 0:1 at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Milan got off to a perfect start after three minutes through Christian Pulisic. However, Liverpool pressed midway through the first half, with Ibrahima Konaté (23rd minute) and captain Virgil van Dijk (41st) heading the Reds into the lead. Dominik Szoboszlai increased the lead to 3:1 (67').
The fatal accident of a Liverpool fan who died near the airport in the Italian city of Bergamo on Tuesday overshadowed the visitors' joy at the victory.
In addition to the defeat, the Italians suffered another setback: French international goalkeeper Mike Maignan was injured in a collision and had to be substituted (51st). AC Milan will host German champions Bayer Leverkusen on matchday 2 in two weeks' time.

The premier class comes in a new guise
How the new Champions League mode works
- 36 teams are part of the new Champions League mode.
- In a so-called league phase, consisting of eight games per team, all 36 clubs are listed in a table.
- The eight matches in the league phase are played against different opponents. The teams are divided into pots beforehand. Each team has to play against two teams per pot.
- The top 8 teams from the league phase advance to the round of 16.
- The remaining places in the round of 16 are awarded in knockout playoffs. A team ranked 9th to 16th will face a team ranked 17th to 24th, with a first and second leg deciding who progresses.
- The losers of the knockout playoffs and clubs ranked 25 to 36 are eliminated from the Champions League. There is no ticket for the Europa League.
- From the round of 16 onwards, the familiar tournament format is used. First and second legs between two teams up to and including the semi-finals. The Champions League winner is crowned in a final match.
