European football champions Spain win their first home game since the European Championship triumph in Berlin.
In its first home game since the European Championship triumph in Berlin, Spain's national team has recorded a narrow victory in the Nations League. The defending champions won 1:0 (0:0) against Denmark in Murcia thanks to a late goal from Martin Zubimendi in the 79th minute.
The victory saw the team of national coach Luis de la Fuente displace the Northern Europeans from the top of Group A4. Spain have seven points, while Denmark remain on six. As things stand, however, both teams would reach the quarter-finals at the end of the group stage in November.
Switzerland, on the other hand, must fear more than ever for their place in the top division of the Nations League. After the 0:2 (0:1) in Serbia, the Nati are bottom of the table with no points after three defeats.
Portugal remain unblemished
Spain's neighbor Portugal also recorded a victory. The team led by superstar Cristiano Ronaldo beat hosts Poland 3:1 (2:0) in Warsaw to take a commanding lead in Group A1 with an unblemished record of three wins.
Ronaldo scored from the spot to make it 2-0 (37'). It was his 133rd goal for the national team, extending his world record. On the Polish side, star striker Robert Lewandowski remained largely pale.
Portugal could secure an early quarter-final berth with another win in Scotland next Tuesday. The Scots had lost 2-1 in Croatia a few hours earlier.
