Germany gave their all, were the better team for long stretches and yet the summer fairytale is over. The Spaniards struck again just before the penalty shoot-out.

- Mikel Merino - 2:1 (119.)
- (89.) 1:1 - Florian Wirtz
The dream of a fourth European Championship triumph after 1972, 1980 and 1996 did not come true for the German national football team. The team coached by Julian Nagelsmann lost 2:1 (1:1, 0:0) to Spain after extra time in the quarter-finals of the home European Championships in Stuttgart on Friday and were eliminated.
Ex-Dortmund player Mikel Merino scored the winner in the 109th minute for the Spaniards, who will meet the winner of the clash between France and Portugal in the semi-finals. Bundesliga professional Dani Olmo (51) from RB Leipzig had given the Iberians the lead, but substitute Florian Wirtz (89) gave the German team hope with his equalizer shortly before the end of normal time. Spain's Daniel Carvajal was shown a yellow card shortly before the final whistle (120.+5).
The DFB team's elimination also marked the end of midfielder Toni Kroos' successful career. The 34-year-old played 114 international matches and became world champion in 2014. Kroos won numerous club titles with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, including the Champions League six times.
