The 17-year-old from Schwyz won gold in 13.24 seconds. The Swiss Athletics delegation thus ends the championships in Finland with two medals. Leon Krummenacher had won bronze in the decathlon on Friday.

Arriving as the world number 1, Sanchez lived up to her role as favorite in an impressive manner. She won both her preliminary heat and her semi-final with aplomb and was convincing in the final. At 13.24 seconds, the athlete from Schwyz set the fifth-best time of her career two days before her 18th birthday despite a headwind of 1.5 m/s and was able to celebrate exuberantly at the finish line.

Jil Sanchez is the fifth Swiss hurdler to win a medal at an U20 European Championships. She was preceded by Sabrina Altermatt (bronze in 2003), Noemi Zbären (gold in 2013), Ditaji Kambundji (gold in 2021) and Valérie Guignard (silver in 2023).
