According to the independent integrity agency (AIU) of the International Association of Athletics Federations, the 35-year-old 2021 Olympic silver medallist admitted to the allegations after he tried to explain a positive doping test with falsified documents.
Cherono was one of the most successful runners of the year over the 42.195 kilometers in 2019, winning the major marathons in Boston and Chicago. On May 23, 2022, he tested positive for the heart medication trimetazidine and was provisionally banned on July 16 of the same year. His current ban runs from this date.
