The Locarno Film Festival is "a cultural signature for Ticino and Switzerland", said the Federal Councillor at the opening on Wednesday evening. Baume-Schneider likened the Piazza Grande to a showcase for a "cosmopolitan, vibrant Switzerland".
The Italian-French historical film "Le Déluge" will kick off the 77th Locarno Film Festival (until August 17) on the Piazza Grande. The film by Italian director Gianluca Jodice ("The Bad Poet") shows Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI at the end of their reign.
The two leading actors Mélanie Laurent ("Inglourious Basterds") and Guillaume Canet ("Asterix & Obelix in the Middle Kingdom") will receive the festival's honorary prize, the Excellence Award Davide Campari, at the opening gala.
