With 72 paintings, sculptures and silhouettes, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen BS is presenting a major Henri Matisse retrospective. The exhibition covers all the creative phases of the French master of modern art.

It combines works from his own collection with those from renowned international museums as well as exhibits from private collections that are rarely on display. Curator Raphaël Bouvier has succeeded in vividly demonstrating the changes in the work of the "artistic chameleon" Matisse, said museum director Sam Keller to the media on Friday.

Based on the poem "Invitation to a Journey" by Charles Baudelaire, the exhibition repeatedly refers to the inspiration that Matisse gathered in various parts of the world. It spans an arc from his early work through the Fauvist and experimental phase and the sensual paintings of the Nice period to the silhouettes in his late work.

The exhibition can be seen from September 22, 2024 to January 26, 2025.
