The more powerful model of the Playstation 5 will be released at the beginning of November. It's not exactly cheap and you may even need a new TV. We explain.

No time? blue News summarizes for you

  • The PS5 Pro offers more powerful hardware, but additional technology such as an HDMI 2.1-capable TV is often required to take full advantage of its performance.
  • At 799 francs, the PS5 Pro is expensive and a price reduction is unlikely.
  • The PS5 Pro is primarily aimed at technology enthusiasts with modern equipment.

Gaming fans have recently been able to pre-order the Playstation5 Pro - not only from Sony, but also from various online retailers. Delivery is planned for the beginning of November. But many owners of the previous PS5 are asking themselves: is an upgrade really necessary or can the Pro model be safely ignored?

Additional costs due to missing hardware?

If you want to exploit the full potential of the PS5 Pro, you may not just have to shell out 800 francs for the new console. This is because the gaming device now has an HDMI 2.1 output. The problem with this is that without a TV or monitor with a suitable connection, a large part of the performance remains unused.

Older devices with HDMI 2.0 only offer 4K at 60 frames per second. Even if a gaming monitor with 1440p is used, 120 Hz may be achieved, but not 4K resolution. So if you want full performance, you have to upgrade.

A suitable TV or monitor is not exactly cheap. Models with the required specifications start at around 500 francs, often from lesser-known manufacturers. For devices from brands such as Philips, Samsung or LG, consumers have to invest around 700 francs or more.

Second-hand prices still stable

In addition to the possible acquisition costs for a new television, the price of the PS5 Pro itself remains a hot topic. A rapid price reduction is unlikely. On the contrary: Sony even increased the price of the PS5 two years after its release - a similar scenario could occur with the PS5 Pro.

A small consolation for owners of the "normal" PS5: If you want to upgrade to the Pro version, you can sell your old console and reduce the purchase price of the PS5 Pro. On trading platforms such as Tutti or Ricardo, you can still get more than 300 francs for first-generation consoles. The price can rise further with additional games or peripherals.

Who should buy it?

The PS5 Pro is clearly aimed at a specific target group: Technology enthusiasts who always want to own the latest hardware and already have a TV with HDMI 2.1 at home.

Those who play games that do not benefit from the additional computing power of the PS5 Pro or only use the console occasionally, on the other hand, can safely stick with the regular PS5.
