The trees are not yet growing into the sky at the Olympics for 20-year-old Aurelia-Maxima Janzen from Bern. She clearly misses out on the A final in the women's skiff.
Janzen was a good 20 meters or four and a half seconds short of third place at the finish. The best three of the two semi-finals qualified for Saturday's race for the medals. Aurelia-Maxima Janzen only maintained a top 3 position in the first 600 meters (of 2000).
Nevertheless, the young Swiss athlete should not be disappointed. With her terrific performance in the quarter-final, when she kept up with Olympic champion and former world champion Emma Twigg for a long time, she had only hinted that the A-final could become an issue. In the semi-final, however, it became clear that the youngest skipper in the field still had her work cut out for her.
Nevertheless, Janzen once again left the Spaniard Virginia Diaz Rivas behind her, who has already won a World Cup race and finished 5th at the last World Championships. Four of Janzen's six semi-final opponents have already won World Cup races. The victory in this semi-final series was secured by Karoline Florijn from the Netherlands, the two-time World Champion.
Janzen will be rowing for an Olympic diploma in the B-final on Saturday.
