For Manuel Akanji, the new season began as the old one ended: with a penalty shoot-out.
But unlike at the European Championship, the Zurich native converted his penalty and won the Super Cup with Manchester City against Manchester United.
The Community Shield, the English duel between the champions and cup winners at Wembley, was tied 1-1 after normal time. In the penalty shoot-out, Akanji made sure of the decision with his 16th penalty, shortly after Jonny Evans had missed for Manchester United.
At the European Championship, Akanji was the only player not to score in the penalty shoot-out in the quarter-final between Switzerland and England.
