According to the military government, at least twelve soldiers have been killed in three attacks in Niger. At least 30 other soldiers were injured, as the army announced on state television.

Dozens of "terrorists" were then killed, it added. The Patriotic Movement for Freedom and Justice (MPLJ) group claimed responsibility for the latest attack. According to the group, it killed 16 soldiers and gendarmes in the attack on an army outpost in the Agadez region. According to the army, the attackers, who had fled towards the Libyan border, were being pursued. In August, the MPLJ split from the Patriotic Liberation Front (FPL), which is fighting against the military government. The army in Niger overthrew the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023.

Following the military coup, Niger, like other countries in the region, increasingly turned to Russia and Iran and called on Western troops to leave the country. The US army declared its complete withdrawal from the country on Monday. The German and French armies had already ordered their troops out of the country.
