A 71-year-old Swiss man and his car collided head-on with that of a 41-year-old German man in Mesocco GR on Thursday afternoon. The German was seriously injured and had to be freed from his vehicle. The Swiss driver's passenger was also seriously injured. The 71-year-old sustained moderate injuries.

The accident occurred at 4.25 p.m. on the A13 highway shortly before the Mesocco Nord junction, as the Graubünden cantonal police reported on Friday.

The Swiss man was traveling south with his wife when the collision with the German occurred. Both vehicles were thrown several meters across the road. Firefighters had to break open the 41-year-old German's car in order to rescue him.

Rega flew the two seriously injured men to nearby hospitals. The 71-year-old Swiss man was taken away by ambulance. The highway had to be closed for five hours for the recovery operation. The police are looking for witnesses.
